Swedish

Swedish massage is the most commonly applied. This modality uses a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles. Swedish massage can shorten recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid and other metabolic wastes. It can increase circulation and stretch the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Swedish massage also stimulates the skin by increasing the flow of oxygen and nutrients. These techniques can affect the nervous system by soothing the nerves themselves. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular stress management program.

Trigger Point

Trigger point therapy is a form of massage that focuses on trigger points in the body. These are physical points in the body that cause pain and can be felt by touch. They are very common and are also known as muscle knots. There can be many causes for trigger points in a person’s body. They may have been caused by a car accident, a fall, or it could be something that developed over time such as poor posture or other long-term strains on muscles. The most obvious and instantaneous benefit of trigger point therapy is pain relief, but there are many more benefits that can be achieved over time with trigger point therapy, including:reduced stiffness, more flexibility and better circulation. The above benefits all take time and sometimes several treatments. This is because multiple treatments help to teach the muscles how to move without causing as much pain. During a trigger point therapy session, the practitioner will apply pressure to specific areas of the body. This might be slightly painful because the muscle tissue that the therapist will be applying pressure to will be very tender already. By applying this pressure, though, trigger point therapy can help relieve pain, even in other parts of the body. While one treatment of trigger point therapy can provide benefits, most patients will need to receive several treatments over an extended period of time. This is the best way to achieve the optimal benefits.

Deep Tissue

This technique focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It's purpose is to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure. Deep tissue usually either follows or crosses the fibers of the muscles, tendons and fascia. It is used to release chronic muscle tension through slower strokes and more direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles. Deep tissue massage helps to break up and eliminate scar tissue. This modality usually focuses on more specific areas and may cause some soreness during or right after the massage.

Sports Massage

This modality is geared towards working on specific problems resulting from athletic performance, training and injury. It encompasses techniques similar to those of Swedish and Deep Tissue.

Reiki

Reiki: ("RAY-kee") A Japanese word representing Universal Life Energy. Reiki is based on the belief that when spiritual energy is channeled through a practitioner, the patient's spirit is healed, which in turn heals the physical body. The treatment proceeds with the practitioner placing his hands on the client in various positions. However, practitioners may use a non-touching technique, where the hands are held away from the recipient's body. The hands are usually kept still for 3 to 5 minutes before moving to the next position. Overall, the hand positions usually give a general coverage of the head, the front and back of the torso, the knees and feet. A state of deep relaxation, combined with a general feeling of well-being, is usually the most noticeable immediate effect of the treatment.
